SEO vs AI SEO: Why You Need Both

Is SEO Dead? Not Even Close

You’ve probably seen the headlines. “SEO is over.” “AI search is taking over.” It’s enough to make anyone wonder whether the money you’ve put into your website is still working for you.

Here’s the short answer: SEO isn’t going anywhere. What’s changing is where your customers look for answers. More and more people now ask AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for advice, alongside Google.

AI SEO builds on the SEO work you’re already doing. In this guide, we’ll explain what both mean, what’s actually changed, and what your current SEO plan does and doesn’t cover.

What Is SEO and What Is AI SEO?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) helps your website show up when people search on Google or Bing. It’s how your business gets into those blue links when a customer goes looking for what you offer.

AI SEO helps your business show up in the answers AI tools give. When someone asks ChatGPT, “Who are the best plumbers in Auckland?” or Google’s AI Overview sums up a topic, AI SEO helps make sure your business is part of that answer.

You might also hear the terms GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation). Don’t let the acronyms throw you. They mean much the same thing as AI SEO: helping AI tools find, understand and recommend your business.

How People Search Has Changed

People still use Google, and a lot.  In fact, Google handles more than 5 trillion searches every year (Google, 2025).

But the way people make decisions is shifting. Before they visit a website, many now ask an AI tool to compare options, sum up reviews or suggest who to call. Often they get what they need from that answer and never click through. A Pew Research Center study of US Google users found people clicked a regular search result on just 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it didn’t. That’s almost half the clicks.

So your customers may form an opinion about your business before they ever reach your website. And if an AI tool recommends a competitor instead of you, you may never know you missed out.

Why SEO Is Still Your Foundation

Think of your online presence like a house. SEO is the foundation, and AI SEO is the next floor up. You can’t build the second storey on shaky ground. AI tools rely on many of the same signals Google does to find, understand and trust a website. If those basics have gaps, your AI visibility will have gaps too.

A strong foundation includes:

  • A clear site structure, so search engines and AI tools can easily work out what each page is about
  • Smart internal links that connect related pages and guide visitors through your site
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages that work well on any device
  • Content that’s easy to read, for people and machines alike
  • Nothing important hidden behind code, so the content you worked hard on can actually be seen

If you’re already on an SEO plan, this is the work we’re doing for you now. It gives you a real head start.

What Your SEO Plan Doesn’t Cover

A head start isn’t the whole race, though. Your SEO plan is built to win on Google. AI tools work a bit differently, and some of what they look at falls outside traditional SEO.

The biggest difference is what happens off your website. Google leans heavily on links from other sites. AI tools pay close attention to what the wider web says about you such as reviews, directory listings, industry articles, forum discussions and comparison pages. A business that’s mentioned often and positively in those places is more likely to be recommended, even if those mentions don’t link back to its website.

There’s also the question of what people actually ask. Someone might type “plumber Auckland” into Google, but they’ll ask ChatGPT, “Who’s a reliable plumber in Auckland who can come out on a weekend?” Those longer questions need content written to answer them directly. Then there’s tracking. Your SEO reports show where you rank on Google, but they can’t tell you whether ChatGPT recommends you or a competitor. That needs its own monitoring.

Here’s how the work changes when you add AI SEO:

What We Do  Traditional SEO  AI SEO
Research  Find the words people type into Google  Find the questions people ask AI tools, often in full sentences
Content  Optimise page titles, headings and keywords  Write clear, direct answers that AI tools can easily pick up and quote
Technical  Make sure Google can find, load and index your pages  Do the same, plus make sure AI tools can access and read your content
Authority  Earn links from trusted, relevant websites  Get your business mentioned across reviews, directories, industry sites and forums, even without a link
Measurement  Track rankings, traffic and enquiries  Track how often AI tools mention and recommend your business

Plenty of this helps on both fronts. Clear, helpful content that answers real questions makes your website stronger on Google and in AI answers, so your SEO investment keeps working harder.

How You’ll Know It’s Working

We’ll keep tracking the numbers you already know such as where your pages rank on Google, how many people visit from search, and, most importantly, the enquiries and sales that come from it.

With AI SEO, we add a few new ones:

  • AI mentions: how often AI tools name your business in their answers
  • Citations: when AI tools link to your website as a source
  • Share of voice: how often you appear compared with your competitors
  • Sentiment: whether AI tools describe your business positively

AI search is still new, and the tools for tracking it are still evolving. That’s why we report in plain language, so you always know what’s working, what isn’t and what we’re doing next.
